Diet Update - 2-18-10

I also posted this to the “Homeschool Moms Getting Healthy” Yahoo E-Group that we started….so you may have already read this…

________________________________________

Well….yesterday was a bad day.  Like I posted, my doctor told me that I gained a pound and need to lose 50-75 pounds (I thought it was only 50).  So, when I got home, I was mad….so I ate some King Cake….and some other stuff.  So….not a successful day.

Last night, I decided that I have to quit feeling sorry for myself.  So, I joined the online WW program so that I can log all of my points, look up recipes, get food lists, etc.  I’m going to try to share some of those with the group also.

My main problem is that I DON’T LIKE ANY FOODS THAT ARE GOOD FOR ME!!!  I don’t like any veggies, except potatoes and corn.  I don’t like any fruits except peaches (the kind in a can), oranges, tangerines, pineapple, and cherries.  I don’t like anything green (unless jelly beans and M & M’s count).  I’ve TRIED to make myself eat salad….used different types of dressings and different varieties of lettuce….but no luck.  I also don’t like wheat pasta.  So, I just have to find foods that I do like and control my portions, I guess.

Today, this is what I’ve had:
* Little Debbie 100 Calorie yellow Cake - 2 points
* Nature’s Own 100% Whole Wheat Bread, with 1 tsp Parkay  toasted - 1.5 points
* 10 oz Diet Dr. Pepper

* 1/2 sandwich made with whole wheat bread (above), Hillshire Farms Turkey, and longhorn colby cheese - 5 points
* 15 oz of water

* Orville Redenbacher’s Smart Pop 94% Fat Free Popcorn - 1 point
* 15 oz of water (drinking this now)

So far, I’ve had 9.5 points today….and I’m hungry!!!  I’ll probably make me a couple of pieces of toast in a little while….that will only be about 3 points.

For dinner, I was going to cook some grilled chicken strips….and something….not sure what….

I feel a bit discouraged because I don’t like anything in the recipes that I’m finding online….

Is it possible to drink TOO MUCH water?  I drink a LOT…like CONSTANTLY have a glass of water by me.

I need to go for a walk or get on the treadmill or wii fit.  But the treadmill does such a great job of collecting dust and serving as a clothes hanger…..

    Hey Cyndi… You can do it gal!!! Starting is always the hardest. You will find recipes you like and food you get used to. I am like you with fruit and veggies… but, I have learned to like some of the WW recipes :) I just need to be more organized and disciplined…sigh….
    Hang in there. I’ve tried to join the group as I’d love to get back on the bandwagon again. This afternoon I dug out all my WW stuff and then tonight I read your email that has been sitting there in my inbox… God’s timing maybe?! You never know :)

    I want to encourage you to keep at it, no matter how hard it is. I started at January 1, at 222.6 pounds and I am only 5′2″. I have finally learned (been losing and gaining for 12 years) that sweets are my weakness. I lost in one month 10 lbs. But this month has been harder from the snow, no electricity, more snow, husband been home because of the snow, and a lot of other stress. I have gained about a pound this month. But it was because I finally had some sweets due to stress. I am (as of today) going back on my no sweet diet! I use First Place 4 Health (similiar to ww, but a Christian Bible study goes along with it) I want you to know that you can call on Jesus when the days get hard, and He will help you though losing your weight! Also, for exercise, I found Body and Spirit Aerobics on the internet. It is a great one to get into, another Christian based exercise! I have lost inches more than the weight right now, but I feel great after exercising! God Bless and keep the faith! You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you!

    Thanks, Joy! Yes, God’s timing is definitely at the center of this. I finally KNOW that I can do this!!! Oh…I just noticed your blog has the word “quilts” in it…..my favorite thing to do when I have spare time….I’m headed there to check you out, girl!

    Thanks, Jenni, for sharing your story. It is SO hard. You are right - We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us! You go girl!

    I too struggle with weight. I will tell you that the diet soda is working against you. Years ago I was a die-hard diet pepsi fan. I was having a lot of headaches and someone told me to quit that habit. I did. My headaches went away AND I lost 10 lbs in two weeks. I have done a lot of research into aspertame and it is nasty stuff. Getting rid of that stuff might go a long long way to help your health. Another thought is food allergies. I have severe food allergies, intolerances and when I can stay away from all I am allergic to(very very hard as there is so much) I lose weight, when I get a hold of stuff I blow up like a balloon. My daughters started to get stomach aches when eating or drinking dairy of any kind. They both stopped all dairy and have lost a lot of weight. My oldest lost around 5-7 lbs in about 2 months doing nothing but no more dairy and my other daughter lost 20lbs over about 6months doing nothing else. So I know without a doubt food allergies or intolerances can be an issue. I think it is a very overlooked issue when thinking about weight. I have been told for years push away from the plate and get more active. Well I do not eat much period as I can’t. when allergic to wheat, well most grains, dairy, soy, coconut and many others it is tough to eat too much. I think it is something that should be looked into for everyone facing medical issues of all kinds. Since i have been eating a diet free of my allergens my health has improved dramatically. I have less pain, less stiffness, more energy. I am not so tired I cannot make it through the day. I have seen eczema go away as well as stomach pain and indigestion and the bloating. All gone when the allergen is removed. I still have the weight but it is slowly, very slowly falling away. With all my family has been through with allergies I want to spread the word. It has been a long couple of years but the blessings are well worth it. I have had to learn how to cook from scratch, as soy is in everything processed. It was so hard at first but what we have found out is that we eat less now. The food is so much better, there is just no comparison. But it is also so much better for you that you eat less. I have learned to substitute and redo recipes so they are safe for our family. It has been a huge huge blessing. Pay attention to how you feel after you eat foods. Do you feel bloated or tired or headaches or just off? I would suspect food intolerance. For me is it clear, my heart starts to flutter or I get shaky. But allergies can manifest themselves in so many ways it is hard to be sure. I hope this helps someone. I know God put me through this for a reason and I would like to help others with it.

    Linda,

    Thanks so much for your insight. I know that aspartame is SO bad for me….and it has been hard to totally let it go. I have been trying so hard. I’m down to where I only have a 10 ounce cup of it in the morning. I drink a lot of water now too.

    I think that intolerances may very well be at the heart of some of my issues. I’m definitely going to look into it! Thanks bunches!

    As someone who has lost weight many times (but still haven’t figured out how to change my lifestyle to stay that way) it’s helpful to find things that you love and substitutions for those things you really miss. A couple that you might find good substitutions: Brewed iced tea (not artificially sweetened powder) made with one of the jillions of flavors out there in a big pitcher to last a while. You can even combine things like healthy green tea with a flavored tea. Jambalaya made with a good chicken andouille (they do exist and it isn’t jambalaya without andouille), chicken breast, shrimp (optional) and brown rice for an extra boost of health and fiber. I just made this for Mardi Gras and tried brown rice in it for the first time and really liked it.

    No great wisdom, just a couple things that might make it a teensy bit easier.

    Thanks so much, Sara. Yes, I do love jambalaya! I live in Louisiana, and it is a MUST! It is so tough….but this is the first time that I feel like I really might do it…and keep doing it. Blessings to you!

    Hi Cyndi, I just wanted to applaud your efforts and to also recommend a cookbook. It is geared towards kids who do not like vegetables, but I have found that my entire family really enjoys the recipes. It is called Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld (Jerry Seinfeld’s wife.) She sneaks fruits and veggies into all kinds of recipes. When I read the above comment about jambalaya, I was thinking of all the vegetable puress you could sneak into that! I now put different purees into everything I make…spaghetti sauce gets spinach or red pepper puree, chili gets buttenut squash (I promise you can NOT taste it and my family likes it better!) She does stuff like dipping chicken nuggets into veg purees before dreadging them in flour, putting beets into brownies, etc. The only recipes I really do not like are the ones using cauliflower. The smell gets to me although she says once the food cools the smell goes away. :) Anyway, just thought that might help gets some veggies in you which will fill you up, gets lots of vitamins and minerals in you & up the fiber content of foods which I know is a big part of WW.
    Much luck to you!

    I recommend for people who don’t like to diet, DON’T DIET. I found a program called Somersizing. Suzanne Somers wrote books on it, and the program works, and it helps with lowering Cholesterol, loosing weight, no more bloating, etc., etc.,

    I was on it before a few years ago, but stopped for personal reasons, couldn’t afford to eat the healthy way, but started it up again and lost 14 pounds in about 3 weeks, so far.

    Get the books from the library and decide for yourselves.
    I mean like for breakfast eating eggs, cream cheese, cheese, bacon, sausage, NO TOAST, veggies added in with the eggs. Or anything else that you can think of with no dairy or wheat. What a breakfast and loosing weight and not feeling bloated when your done. Who doesn’t love that.
